Hillary Supporters Targeting Altmire's Defeat

. . . and not just targeting Jason Altmire . . . The McCain Campaign, as I learned today on a conference call consisting of 80 groups backing Hillary Clinton (and a handful of GOP activists, including me), is making major efforts to reach out to Hillary Supporters. These Hillaryites and friends share a common goal: exposing and defeating Barack Obama. The effort is generating national -- and even international -- publicity. Some of the most significant activists in American politics participated in the Conference Call.

The McCain Camp has its most senior campaign people, including Carly Fiorina (a possible V-P choice) talking -- and mainly listening -- to Hillary Supporters. I've said on this blog that wthout significant support from them, there will be no victory, and I believe that's also John's view.

Today on the call, the head of Women for Fair Politics said that she feared "the train (the possible nomination of HRC) had left the station. She also said she hoped everyone would do what, in their own hearts and minds, is the right thing. She noted, in essence, that will be different strokes for different folks.

The moderator of the call was Cristi Adkins, an activist and media guru, who should be writing soon about today's activities on the following web site: http://www.clintons4mccain.com/. I'll have up soon other web sites and e-mail addresses you can use in this "JustSayNoBama" effort.

The outreach going on has significant implications for Pennsylvania candidates, especially Melissa Hart (opposing Jason Altmire), Toni Gilhooley (opposing Tim Holden), and Tom Manion (opposing Patrick Murphy). In all cases, the Democratic incumbents helped pave the way for Sen. Clinton's eventual defeat in the battle for the Party's nomination. In districts that went two-to-one for Mrs. Clinton, "SuperDelegates" ended up -- or even started out -- supporting Barack Obama.

No self-respecting Hillary backer will vote for -- or otherwise support -- Altmire, Holden, or Murphy. Efforts are underway -- see, for example, http://www.dncreform.com/ -- to target and defeat people like these three Democrats, as well as selected others around the country. You'll hear more about that soon.

"Three Stooges" of Pennsylvania Politics

"The best way for a Democrat to get elected in Pennsylvania is to pretend he's pro-life and pro-gun -- and never explain why he's in a Party that's neither."

Note: At the bottom of this column is what might (key word) be some important information about Barack Obama's place of birth. Obama has a problem with saying things (about uncles that don't exist, for example) that aren't true, and this site is one of many working to keep him . . . honest.

In my earlier columns (scroll down), I've written about the "three stooges" of Pennsylvania politics: Sen. Bob Casey, Jr., Congressman Tim Holden (17th district, Harrisburg and surrounding counties), and Congressman Jason Altmire (4th district, western PA). As an honorary member -- the fourth "Stooge" -- we have Congressman Patrick Murphy of the 8th district (mainly Bucks County).

All of these gentlemen are Roman Catholics (as am I). All of them claim to be "pro-life." Actually, that claim is no more than a political gesture. Strong words, I know. But I hope they're words that these incumbents' opponents (Casey not up until 2012; Toni Gihooley against Holden; Melissa Hart against Altmire; and Tom Manion against Murphy) will also feel comfortable using.

If these candidates truly do have pro-life views, they keep some very strange company. Murply endorsed Barack Obama -- the most pro-abortion candidate ever to run for president. Obama favors partial-birth abortion, a procedure seen as hideous even by many liberals, as well as so-called "live-birth abortion," which Obama as an Illinois State Senator voted to allow. (Live-birth abortion results from botched abortions, where an injured infant is allowed to die rather than receive medical care.)

This the Obama enthusiastically supported by Casey and Murphy -- and (unenthusiastically?) supported by Altmire and Holden.

Jason Altmire ran for office as a pro-life Roman Catholic. When he got to Congress, however, he wait to vote for federal funding of research that resulted in the destruction of viable embryos.

Don't get me wrong: I believe elected officials have a constitutional right to be pro-choice. couldn't There are some very honorable people who hold such a position.

Rep. Tim Holden, a complete political sad-sack, claims to be pro-life. But of course he didn't challenge either of the presidential candidates taking a pro-abortion position. As I pointed out, Holden is perhaps the only Democratic Superdelegate who is STILL undeclared. He's the only delegate in history to declare his position as "moot," whatever that means.

Jason Altmire? As my earlier column notes, he has pronounced that he is still "undeclared," but that he "supports Barack Obama. " Since Obama is poised to lose Altmire's district in a landslide, we might assume that the words "Barack Obama" will not pass the congressman's lips until after the election.

How Altmire can be undeclared and declared at the same time is something I'll leave up to him to explain. Perhaps Altmire and others will announce someday that they were "for the Senator before they were against him."

The three (or four?) stooges of Pennsylvania politics clearly assume their constituents are political nitwits. They believe the secret to success in Keystone State politics is to talk out of both sides of their mouths.

Frankly, when a supposedly pro-life politican (such as Casey) backs presidential candidates who are militantly pro-abortion -- as Obama is -- then there is something very wrong going on.

Senator Bob Casey, Jr. comes from a family synonymous with respect for the sanctity of life. However, apparently because of a family-grudge against the Clintons, Casey campaigned day-and-night for Barack Obama, a candidate who's anathema to most Pennsylvanians. Casey has never explained his strange action. Apparently, he believes voters have very short memories.

Someone recently wrote me asking how someone like Casey could bring himself to back Barack Obama. The answer ultimately lies in the totally cynicism of Pennsylvania politics. Casey is pro-life when he's campaigning for moderate Democrat votes -- and then ignores the subject when he's safely in office.

If you're pro-honesty in politics, you will never again cast a vote for or donate money to people like Casey, Holden, Altmire, or Murphy. I hope you'll vote for and contribute to the following candidates, all of whom need and deserve your financial support.

Tom Manion (against Murphy)

Cindy Reidhead of http://thepinkflamingo.blogharbor.com has been searching Hawaii records to determine that Barack Obama was in fact born in the U.S. (Hawaii). Here's the bulletin Cindy sent out Friday afternoon. (She's located in Hobbs, NM and was a protege of Republican political genius Lee Atwater.)

Dog Food, Democrats, Davis

Okay, I've now had more than 50,000 (!) visitors to my various blogs. My goal is get 150,000-plus additional visitors by Election Day. If I can somehow accomplish that, as well as get many other bloggers to "adopt" some outstanding candidates, those could be major factors in getting one (or more!) my "underdog" congressional candidates elected. It’s come to my attention (and how!) that a lot of Republicans are concerned about Rep. Tom Davis’ recent 20-page memo proclaiming the Republican Party as the equivalent of a “dead man walking.” He said if the “Republican Party brand” was a “dog food” it would be pulled from the shelves.

Davis is a 7th term Republican congressman from Virginia’s 11th District (Fairfax County, just outside DC). He’s retiring this year on a huge pension and life-time health benefits for him and his. As a congressman, he’s as “Beltway as it gets.” He’s one of a handful of Christian Scientists in Congress.

I hope he doesn’t regard his leaving as one of the operative causes of what he sees as the demise of the Republican Party. His comments don’t frighten me; they irritate me.

If the Republican Party has its troubles – and it does – people like him are responsible. He’s one of the Republican “leaders.” Tom Davis, whose voting record is half liberal, half conservative, voted for most of the big spending bills he now decries.

He loved his “earmarks,” those wasteful “special projects” made famous by Alaska’s “Bridge to Nowhere.” He never realized that no Republican congressman or congresswoman anymore can support earmarks, because they are invariably wasteful spending that adds to the budget deficit.

Tom’s constituents are presumably creating uproar over gasoline prices reaching $4 a gallon. However, Tom voted against drilling in ANWR, one of a number of Republicans who did so. Tom is one of those Republicans who think it’s a good idea to drill for and produce oil in other countries, but not in ours. People in Mideast call that hypocrisy, and it’s one reason they refuse to produce additional oil to satisfy our needs.

As I suggested earlier, Tom is one of those who uses the hip phrase “Republican brand.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “History is the lengthened shadow of a man (person).” Well, Tom, a political Party is the extension of the people in it. It is not “Frosted Flakes” or a Hyundai car.

If you have excellent people, you have a great Party. If you more than your share of Mark Foleys (of nasty e-mail fame), or Duke Cunningham (now in jail for bribery), or Bob Ney (also in jail), you have a Party that needs to rethink who it is and what it wants to be.

The Democrat’s “brand” is doing very well either. Right now, the national approval rating for Congress is lower than George Bush’s. It’s at 22%. That figure is a vote on the performance of people like Tom Davis. It’s a failing grade and one people like him richly deserve.

The Republican “brand” (i.e., the people running for office) in Pennsylvania is very strong. That’s because the people – Melissa Hart, Marina Kats, Tom Manion, Toni Gilhooley, and Mike Livingston – are outstanding human beings. Their life stories are tales of heroism and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Tom Manion (from Bucks county) is a career Marine whose Naval Academy graduate son, Travis, died for his country in Iraq. He may or may not win in November, but if there's a better man in the Commonwealth I'd love to meet him. Toni Gilhooley is a 25-year-veteran of the PA State Police. Marina Kat emigrated from Russia and become one of the top businesswomen and attorneys in the state. Melissa Hart grew up in tough circumstances and became a congresswoman. Mike Livingston is an attorney and an expert on taxes. The U.S. House would benefit from their presence.

Tom Davis one of the rudderless “leaders” who helped create the mess in Washington. Now, he’s turned around and, for the first time in his life, discovered there . . . a mess.

Spare us your lectures Tom. In Pennsylvania we’re planning to send a much better grade of people to Congress. They are going to solve problems – in national security, in spending, in terrorism threats, in education, and in crime – that you barely touched in your 14 years in the House. You walked many miles in the Halls of Congress, but you never left a footprint.

The Republican congressional candidates in Pennsylvania are going to take back seats we lost in 2006 –and add a couple of surprises for the Democrats.

Abraham Lincoln, the Republican Party's second presidential nominee

On this day in 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the Republican Party's presidential nomination. Easily overlooked is the fact that both he and the 1856 nominee, Georgia's John C. Fremont, were southerners.

John Marshall Harlan, Republican dissenter from the Plessy v. Ferguson decision

On this day in 1896, the U.S. Supreme Court issued the Plessy v. Ferguson decision, which declared "separate but equal" to be constitutional. Dissenting from this infamous decision was Justice John Marshall Harlan, who wrote:"Our Constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens."

After commanding a U.S. Army regiment during the Civil War, Harlan was elected Attorney General of Kentucky in 1863. Running on the Republican ticket, he lost two races for Governor before President Rutherford Hayes (R-OH) appointed him to the Supreme Court in 1877.

President Eisenhower appointed his grandson, John Harlan II, to the Supreme Court in 1955.
